'Ascents of the Soul' includes music for solo harpsichord by Froberger, Louis Couperin, D'Anglebert and Fischer.
The programme includes works by masters of the expressive harpsichord style and has been released in 2016 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the birth of perhaps the greatest of them all, Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667). The programme's title is inspired by Froberger's Lamento for Ferdinand IV which ends with a rising scale symbolizing the ascent of Ferdinand's soul to heaven, made explicit in the manuscript by a drawing of clouds and welcoming angels at the top of the scale, and by allusions to the soul found in the other tombeaux, laments and suites which follow it on the disc. The programme includes some of the most remarkable works ever composed for the harpsichord: music both profound and uplifting. The disc is beautifully presented, including a full fascimile of Froberger's autograph for the Lamento (Die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Wien) together with details from Nicholas Poussin's Assumption of the Virgin (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC).
